Our People: Jordy Butter

‘Have a lot of meetings’

Name? Jordy Butter

Born? 1994

Job? Second year PhD student at LHCb

What is your research? I take the LHCb data and try to find out how often two hadronic decays occur.
One is the decay of a B-meson to a Ds-meson and a pion. The other is a decay from a Lambda b-particle to a Ds-meson and a proton. The fact that the LHC is shut down momentarily is not a problem, because LHCb has gathered data for several years. The data that I am working with now are reliable and there are also good simulations.

Do you ever lay awake at night? Not really actually. Yes, sometimes, just before bed, I think about small things in the analyses that might need to be different. But I can pretty easily let that go until the next day.

Favourite part? That I work with people from different nationalities on a big experiment but that I still have my own part in it.

Best advice? Have a lot of meetings. I didn’t get that advice from anyone in particular but I notice that it really works. For instance, we have a weekly Skype meeting. This helps you be sure that you are not walking a dead course for a month.

Fun fact? With ex colleagues from an old side job at Praxis, we often hire an ice hall in Hoorn. Then we can play ice hockey together.
