Rahul Balasubramanian, PhD at Nikhef, will defend his thesis Wednesday 10 April 2024 at 13.00 at the University of Amsterdam.

“Effectively going beyond the Standard Model. Combined interpretations of Higgs boson and electroweak measurements with the ATLAS experiment”

“The most fundamental theory of nature, the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, describes
physics at the smallest distances. However, it has glaring gaps both in theoretical considerations and indirect experimental observations that indicate a fundamental description of nature beyond the current Standard Model.
Since the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the number of Higgs bosons observed in data has increased almost thirty times providing a unique opportunity to study precisely the properties of this crucial particle to uncover any subtle hints of deviation from the SM.

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory, SMEFT in short,
provides the theoretical foundation to extend the Standard Model to look for subtle hints of deviation in data. This thesis presents the study of Higgs boson measurements within the SMEFT based on data collected from proton-proton collision at the ATLAS experiment between 2015-2018.

Furthermore, SMEFT provides a language to consistently search for deviations across different measurements.
This aspect is demonstrated by a global fit to Higgs boson and Electroweak measurements from the ATLAS experiment with Electroweak precision observables measured in electron-positron collisions at LEP and SLD.”
