Theoretical physics
Nikhef’s Theoretical Physics group performs theoretical research on a wide range of fundamental topics in high-energy physics from flavour physics, perturbative QCD for collider phenomenology, and non-perturbative QCD for proton structure to Beyond the Standard Model physics, cosmology, and gravitational waves modelling. Research at the Nikhef Theory group covers forefront topics in particle physics and cosmology, and has strong connections with a wide range of experimental programs at CERN and elsewhere. The Theory Group serves as the Dutch national centre for particle physics phenomenology and has close links with the theoretical physics partner groups at the Free University Amsterdam, the University of Groningen/Van Swinderen Institute, the Radboud University and Maastricht University, as well as with those at the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam (ITFA) with GRavitation AstroParticle Physics Amsterdam (GRAPPA) at the University of Amsterdam and at the Leiden University. We have extensive interactions with the Nikhef experimental groups, exploiting the exciting opportunities offered by the rich scientific environment in the institute. Our research is funded by various national (NWO, eScience Center) and international (ERC) funding agencies.
Staff members of the Theoretical Physics group collaborate closely with colleagues from other theory institutes and with experimental research groups in The Netherlands, and also have a broad network of international collaborators. These collaborations often translate into joint projects with PhD candidate co-supervision and joint publications. The group also has an active visiting scientist programme, enabling very fruitful collaboration and cross-fertilization at the international level, and organizes a wide array of scientific activities such as seminars, colloquia, mini-workshops, and advanced lectures of PhD candidates.
