“The Beauty and the Boost: a Higgs Boson Tale”
The Standard Model of particle physics describes with great accuracy what all ordinary matter is made of and how its building blocks interact with each other. Nevertheless, both theoretical issues and unexplainable observations suggest that the Standard Model is not the final theory of Nature. Many of the unsolved puzzles of particle physics are either directly or indirectly linked to the recently discovered Higgs boson. For this reason, precision measurements of the Higgs boson’s properties are a powerful tool to look for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model and could point into the direction of the final theory.
The proton-proton collision data which have been collected by the ATLAS experiment during the second operational run of the LHC, offer an unprecedented opportunity to investigate rare Higgs-boson processes, which are particularly sensitive to new physics scenarios, but experimentally difficult to access. Several such measurements, which target Higgs-boson decays to heavy-flavour quarks, as well as their combinations are presented in this thesis.
