With a subtle change to its logo, from today, Nikhef marks its upcoming 50th anniversary.
Nikhef was founded on 17th June 1975 in Amsterdam. At the time, the national institute was formed by the universities of Amsterdam and Nijmegen, the FOM foundation and the nuclear research institute IKO.
Today, Nikhef is a national partnership of NWO-I and a total of six universities. Its headquarters are at Amsterdam Science Park.
Nikhef employs about 380 scientists, technical and supporting staff. The institute has its own workshops and design departments, and collaborates internationally with CERN and other institutions with often prominent contributions.
Its research covers everything from gravitational waves to particle physics, both with experiments and theory. Every year, it delivers dozens of PhD students.
Nikhef’s website and social media channels will pay a lot of attention to the institute’s history and future in the week around 17th June.
On 17th June, the Nikhef community will celebrate the anniversary with a large internal event in Amsterdam. More online and offline celebrations will follow over the course of the year.
