Nikhef director Jorgen D’Hondt kicked off the celebration of the institute’s 50th anniversary with a special video message. In it, he emphasises the family feeling within Nikhef.
The National Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef was founded in Amsterdam on 17th June 1975. At the time, the national institute was supported by the universities of Amsterdam (UvA) and Nijmegen (Radboud), the FOM Foundation and the Institute for Nuclear Physics Research (IKO).
Today, Nikhef is a national partnership between NWO-I and a total of six universities. Its headquarters are located at Amsterdam Science Park.
Nikhef employs around 380 scientists, technical and support staff. The institute has its own workshops and design departments and collaborates internationally with CERN and other institutions, often making prominent contributions.
The research covers everything from gravitational waves to particle physics, both in terms of experiments and theory. Every year, it produces dozens of university PhD graduates.
The specialĀ anniversary website nikhef50 and Nikhef’s social media are devoting a lot of attention to the history and future of the institute this week. Special attention is being paid to the university partners and their contributions, and there is a series of duo interviews about collaboration within Nikhef.
On Tuesday 17 June, the Nikhef community will celebrate the anniversary with a large internal event in Amsterdam. More online and live festivities and events will follow throughout the year.
