A delegation from the French research organization for nuclear and particle research IN2P3 visited Nikhef in Amsterdam on Monday, February 16.
During the day, the six delegation members visited Nikhef’s laboratories, data center, and technical workshops, and spoke with group leaders and researchers.
IN2P3 is the French national institute for particle and astroparticle physics, both fundamental and applied. The visit is part of a series of bilateral meetings of Nikhef with institutes in among others Canada, Germany, Great-Brittain.
Like Nikhef, the institute plays a national coordinating role in bringing together science and technology across French universities. There is a strong focus on applications in healthcare, energy, and the environment.
Like Nikhef, IN2P3 has a TIER-1 data center for GRID computing for the LHC experiments.
IN2P3 and Nikhef are also both members of various international collaborations in fundamental physics, in the LHC experiments at CERN, but also in projects such as KM3NeT, Virgo, Xenon, Auger, Einstein Telescope, and DUNE.
On Monday, the delegation visited the assembly hall at Amsterdam Science Park, where the sensor bulbs for the KM3NeT detector in the Mediterranean Sea are produced.
