Funding 2024

Funding&Expenses

The 2024 funding level of the Nikhef partnership has increased sizable compared with the previous year: 70,3 M€ (cf. 50,3 M€ in 2023). The most significant explanation for this increase (about 15 M€) is the contribution from the Growth Fund for the preparation of a bid for the Einstein Telescope in the Euregio Meuse Rhine (ET-EMR).

The expenses for the ET-EMR-activities are categorized under ‘Miscellaneous’, as they are not purely attributable to the scientific activity ‘Gravitational Waves’. The expenses for accelerator-based particle physics (ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE) and eEDM together comprise 20% of the direct expenses. Astroparticle physics activities, for which construction activities are considerable, in particular in Gravitational Waves physics (ET pathfinder) and Neutrino physics (KM3NeT), make out 25% of direct expenses.

The enabling activities (computing, detector R&D and Theory) comprise 18% of expenses, whilst the miscellaneous activities (in particular the ET-EMR activities) and Datacenter activities make out the remainder (36%) of the direct costs.
