PhD candidate and Nikhef engineer Jesse van Dongen spent four years working on recipes for vibration-free mounting of the mirrors used in gravitational wave detectors. Noise suppression is a subtle interplay of components that dampen noise and generate noise themselves, especially at low frequencies. He obtained his PhD from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on 28 May.
