The proton is one of the most common particles in the universe. It is one of the main building blocks of an atom. You find them in the air you breathe, the coffee you drink and the insides of stars and planets. In a recent article in NRC, Nikhef researcher Juan Rojo (professor of theoretical physics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) talks about the proton, an “everyday particle with a mysterious inner world.”
“The coming decades will be an exciting time for proton research,” Rojo says. “It may be a familiar and mundane particle, but it will keep us busy for the foreseeable future.”
