2026-03-20 11:00 | 2026-03-20 12:00

Friday 20 March, 11.00h, at the Colloquium room at Nikhef

Speakers: Lynn Silverman Gaillard and Lucie Linssen

Title: “Invisible Energy”

The documentary “Invisible Energy” follows the 1984 run of the UA1 experiment at the CERN proton-antiproton collider. The 1983 discovery of the bosons W and Z° led to the Physics Nobel prize for Simon van der Meer and Carlo Rubbia, the spokesperson of the UA1 experiment. The film, produced as part of a doctorate in visual anthropology, enters the daily life at the UA1 experiment of physicists, engineers and technicians. It includes interviews with Carlo Rubbia and with theorists. It raises pertinent questions about the future of particle physics that are still of great importance today.

Film producer: Lynn Silverman Gaillard

2025 remastering: Lynn Silverman Gaillard, Gijs de Rijk and Lucie Linssen

The 50-minute film will be preceded by a short introduction by Lynn and Lucie.

Further comments:

The film is spoken in English and French, with French and English subtitles.
The film is of particular interest to physicists and the broad span of other colleagues with involvement in particle physics. The term “visual anthropology” primarily refers to the method in which the filmmaker fully integrates into the group and observes while everyone goes about their own work. The interviews complement the “visual anthropology” aspect ; they prove to be very focused and historically relevant.
Although at a distance in the counting room, the film shows a few Nikhef colleagues participating in the UA1 experiment.
