Fragment Genealogie Gandon |

Korte biografie van Charles Gandon [12]
Charles Gandon began his career by assisting in construction of gas works in Germany. He moved to Smyrna, where he was Engineer & Manager, of the Ottoman Gas Company. After a period as Engineer & Manager of gasworks in Bombay, Gandon returned to England as Engineer & Manager of the Crystal Palace Gas Company, a position he held for over 20 years. He was President of The Gas Institute in 1888.
Obituary Charles Gandon (1837-1902)
Grace's Guide to British Industrial History [13]
Charles Gandon, born on the 13th June, 1837, began his engineering career as a pupil of Mr. Henry Palfrey Stephenson, under whom he was subsequently engaged on railway works and on the construction of gasworks in Germany.
From 1861 to 1863 he was an Assistant Engineer on the Great Northern Railway, and in the latter year he was appointed Engineer and Manager at Smyrna to the Ottoman Gas Company, There he not only superintended the erection of the gasworks, but conferred lasting benefit on the town by tapping an excellent supply of water.
His good work in Smyrna, earned for him the confidence of the Company, and when he finally settled in England he was elected a member of the Board of Directors.
In 1869, Mr. Gandon left Smyrna to take up the post of Engineer and Manager of the Bombay Gasworks, where he remained until 1872, when he was appointed to the charge of the Para Gasworks, Brazil.
In 1876 Mr. Gandon returned to England as Engineer to the Crystal Palace District Gas Company, which post he held for twenty-one years, and during that period the works of the Company increased greatly in importance.
After his retirement in 1897 he undertook no professional work, although he remained on the Boards of the Ottoman and the Bombay Gas Companies and the Woking Water and Gas Company.
He died at his residence, The Woodlands, Tressillian Crescent, Brockley, on the 8th October, 1902.
Mr. Gandon was a Member of the Society of Engineers and of the Gas Institute, on which bodies he served the office of President in 1885 and 1888 respectively.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 3rd December, 1867, was subsequently placed among the Associate Members, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 31st May, 1881.

Obituary John Gandon (1862-1916)
The Journal of Gas Lighting and Water Supply. Vol. CXXXIII. 15 February 1916 [27]
The death took place, somewhat suddenly, after a short illness
last Sunday week, of Mr. John Gandon, the Engineer and Manager
of the Ottoman Gas Company's works at Smyrna, to which position he was appointed in 1890 - succeeding Mr. H. W. Andrews,
who then became Consulting Engineer in London to the Company. Mr. Gandon, whose death at a comparatively early age -
he was in his 54th year - will be widely regretted, was on a visit
to England, and died at Sydenham , the burial taking place on
Thursday, in Nunhead Cemetery. After being educated at the
Surrey County School, Cranleigh, he became pupil to his father,
the late Mr. Charles Gandon, at the works of the then Crystal
Palace District Gas Company, and was for some time at the
Saltley works of the Birmingham Corporation Gas Department,
subsequently becoming Manager to the Ascot District Gas Company, with whom he remained some three years. Mr. Gandon
left Smyrna last March for Athens, in order to transact business
from there for his Company, and to communicate with his London office , but he was unable to return to Smyrna, on account of
the blockade. He therefore came to England in August, leaving
the elder of his two sons, Cecil, in charge of the works at Smyrna.
His younger son, Kenneth, is engaged under Mr. S. Y. Shoubridge,
at the South Suburban Gas Company's works. Mr. Gandon was
an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Besides
the two sons, there is one daughter , and he also leaves a widow.
With all of them sincere sympathy will be felt.

And Mrs Wright, of Flowergate Cross, Whitby, to Phoebe Joan Katherine, only daughter of the late John Gandon Esq. M.I.C.E. and Mrs Gandon of Smyrna.

""The chief event on the programme, the Austrian Championships, was won by H.W. Gandon, an Englishman residing in Vienna, whose easy and graceful play gained him general admiration. According to the Austria custom, each of the champions received, in addition to his challenge cup, a decoration in the form of a star, set with precious stones, and there were further prizes for the different events, presented by the Governor, by Baron Alfred Ringhoffer, and by the clubs of Prague."
