LAPEKES- Lawrence L. Lapekes, Grand Rapids, MI.
Mr. Lawrence Lee Lapekes (AKA Larry/Tippy) age 86, passed away and went to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 18, 2020. Larry was born on October 15th, 1933 in a farmhouse in Wayland, MI. He was the 10th of 11 children to be born to Anna and Luka Lapikas. As a child, Larry would walk 1.5 miles to attend a one room school house with 50 other children, and his favorite subject was Geography. When the family moved to another farm in the Wayland area he attended the public school and rode the bus. He performed so well in school the teachers only required him to attend twice a week, a blessing because he had to help on the family farm tending cows and working in the muck (onion) fields. As a kid he liked to box and play football. He was small but fast! At 8 he almost drowned in Bowens Mills, but the family dog "Pal," a police dog, saved him by dragging him to shore. Though it was not his favorite, he would sometimes go coon hunting with his father. At 12 years old he just did not enjoy sitting in the dark all alone. Larry lived on the family farm until age 16. Eager to grab life by the horns he enlisted in the Air Force by "fudging" his age. His Dad found out and had to set the record straight with Uncle Sam! Larry then moved in with his brother Ed in Grand Rapids and helped haul onions to Detroit. Some of his first jobs included working in a junkyard, a roller driver, laying blacktop for Coprovia, working in a grocery warehouse, driving a hi-lo and roofing with his brother Steve. At age 18 he learned the carpentry trade which led him to start a business with his brother Ed, and together they ran Home Siding and Construction Company for over 60 years! He always said that the day he laid down his hammer was the day he would get old. At 19 he married his sweetheart, Beverly Joan VanPutten. Together they raised three daughters, Cyndi, Christie and Brendalynn Lapekes. Some of their favorite pastimes included roller skating, dancing and going to the drive inn (sneaking Beverly in the trunk), and spending time with his brothers and their wives. Later in life they loved to travel, go on cruises and spend time at their cottage in Irons. Larry's favorite hobbies included fixing up old cars and motorcycles and hunting with his brothers. In the summer of 1960 he and two buddies founded the Para-Dice Motorcycle Club. They would host motorcycle hill climbs at Egypt Valley, (Larry won several trophies), and ride in parades. Today the club is responsible for hosting the "Blessing of the Bikes" in Baldwin, MI. His very first motorcycle was a 1945 Harley he rebuilt himself. During the late 1970's and early 80's he was part of the Snowmobile Association, a passion he would enjoy with his friends and family. Many wonderful times were had at the family cabin in Irons riding snowmobiles and sledding. After 43 marvelous years together, Larry lost his beloved wife, Beverly, on November 26th, 1996, just two months after their youngest daughter's wedding. In 2001 he married his second wife, Cynthia Cheyne. They enjoyed 18 years of marriage together, wintering in Florida with many friends and spending time at the lake cottage at Big Pine Island. They shared a passion for Harleys and attended motorcycle rallies in Michigan and Florida. Larry loved his dogs and had many throughout his life. His Boston Terriers were his favorites, small and feisty! His daughters will remember him as the man who knew everyone and everyone knew him, loved by so many. He was tenderhearted to his girls, with a quiet, calm nature and always proud of them. To his girls he was the best Daddy in the world, such a strong and handsome man. Never has a man been more well-loved by his girls. He lived an epic life! Larry will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his wife, Cynthia, his daughters, Cyndi (Tom) Cameron, Christie (Carlos) Gutierrez, Brendalynn (Mark) Eustice, five grandchildren, Krystal, Bob, Ashley, Austin and Bella, two great-grandsons, Christian and Kaden, step-daughter Stephanie (Matt) Hooker, several step-grandchildren, one step great-grandson, nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, at St. Mary Magdalen Parish, 1253 52nd St. SE. Rev. Fr. Peter Vu, Celebrant. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Monday, January 20, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at Stroo Funeral Home with a scripture service beginning at 7 p.m., and Wednesday, January 22, from 10 - 11 a.m. at the church. Mass will begin immediately following. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice. |
