The objective of the HERMES experiment at DESY (Hamburg)
is the study of the origin of the proton spin. By scattering polarized
high-energy electrons (or positrons) from polarized targets, the
amount of spin carried by the various quark types can be measured.
More recently, the role of gluons and possibly even the orbital
angular momentum of the quarks is being investigated.
The Dutch contribution to the HERMES experiment at DESY
is a collaboration between the research groups at
NIKHEF and the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. First data was taken
in 1995, and the experiment was closed in July 2007. Data acquired by
HERMES is still actively being analyzed.
