The road to the discovery of a Higgs boson in the H WW (*)  ℓνℓν channel

Magda Chelstowska, promovenda aan het Nikhef, verdedigt haar proefschrift woensdag 25 september 2013 aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

The understanding of the structure of atoms, which are the building blocks of the elements surrounding us, has greatly improved throughout the years. The interactions between the constituents of atoms and the atoms themselves are well understood. The last remaining piece of the puzzle was to find the mechanism actually responsible for giving masses to the particles. A clear manifestation of the Higgs mechanism, the ingredient of the Standard Model of particle physics providing an explanation of the masses of the elementary particles, would be an additional particle called a Higgs boson. Such particleis believed to be found by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at CERN.
This thesis focuses on the search of the Higgs boson in one of its key decay modes,
H → WW (*) → ℓνℓν .
