This week Nikhef researcher André Mischke was elected for membership of Academia Europaea.
André Mischke is Associate Professor and deputy team leader of the Dutch research group in the ALICE experiment at CERN. He has been involved in several international experiments such as NA49 at the CERN-SPS and STAR at the BNL-RHIC facility. His current main research focuses on the study of hot and dense QCD matter in collisions of heavy atomic nuclei at the Large Hadron Collider. Recently, he was awarded a Vici grant from NWO to determine the dynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma, a new state of matter that is believed to have existed in the early expanding universe a few microseconds after the big bang. His group has a world-leading role in the measurements of heavy-flavour particles where they provided the first measurement of D-mesons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Moreover, he is involved in the development of diagnostic devices in medial imaging. He has many administrative positions on national and international level.
Earlier this year Nikhef researchers Sijbrand de Jong and Raimond Snellings also joined Academia Europaea.
