Robert Fleischer Extraordinary Professor

29 februari 2012

Per 1 March 2012, Nikhef researcher Robert Fleischer has been appointed as Extraordinary Professor at the Theoretical Physics group of the VU University Amsterdam to a chair on ‘High-Energy Physics with an Emphasis on B Physics’.

Robert Fleischer is a senior scientist at the Nikhef Theory group since September 2009. He did his studies in physics at the Technical University Munich, where he received his diploma degree in 1992 and his PhD in 1995 (both with the highest grades). He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Karlsruhe, CERN and DESY, and was appointed as scientific staff member in the CERN Theory Unit in 2002. In 2002, he also obtained his Habilitation in Theoretical Physics from the University of Hamburg.

Robert Fleischer’s main research interest is the Standard Model of Particle Physics and its extensions, with a focus on flavor physics and CP violation as probes for "new” physics. In this line of research, B-mesons, which are particles composed of a b ("beauty") quark and a light antiquark, play a key role and are the subject of the dedicated LHCb experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Robert Fleischer has a long-standing interest in the physics potential of this experiment and keeps strong interactions with the corresponding experimental groups at Nikhef and the VU, which is also reflected by a FOM ‘projectruimte’ grant that he shares with Gerhard Raven.

Robert Fleischer is (co-)author of more than 100 publications. Besides his research and scientific work, he was invited lecturer at a variety of international schools on high-energy physics, has served as theory convener at workshops, and has been involved in the organization of international conferences, such as the Beauty series, where he is co-chairing the International Advisory Committee since February this year.
