27-04-2012: Colloquium Antonio Pellegrino

27 april 2012

Friday 27 April, 11:00h, at Nikhef in H331

Speaker: Antonio Pellegrino (LHCb)

Title: "Mu’s, Susy and the Bees:
the never-ending search for decays of B_s mesons to pairs of muons"

Abstract:
LHCb is getting there! While theoretical calculations based on the Standard Model predicted rates that could appear insignificant, the experimental studies of the decay of the B_s meson to pairs of muons are approaching these rates, placing smaller and smaller upper limits. The measurements at LHCb, CMS and ATLAS are bringing these upper bounds closer and closer to the theoretical predictions, in the process excluding more and more New-Physics scenarios predicting an enhancement of this decay rate, translated by some media as "putting supersymmetry on the spot". I will try to give you an objective view of the status of this search at LHCb and a more subjective outlook on its future.
