Nikhef is an institute that seeks to answer the most fundamental questions about the universe and our existence. This quest for the deepest “why” is not only a challenge for the scientists and engineers involved. It also addresses the deepest questions of non-scientists, both consciously and unconsciously.
General human curiosity inspires scientists, while also imposing an obligation to make their work and its results accessible to society and the public.
Nikhef aims to make a significant impact on the understanding of and for fundamental physics among a broad public, from young to old. The institute welcomes visitors during open houses, workshops, and educational projects. Nikhef staff give guest lectures and presentations. The institute actively seeks visibility in the media.
Nikhef also organizes special activities for students interested in particle physics, technology, and research. From research projects and masterclasses to educational initiatives and activities for secondary schools: young people can experience science in practice at Nikhef.

Nikhef’s research also impacts society through collaboration with industry and by creating educational opportunities and employment. Nikhef staff are closely involved with university programs and colleges. Projects offer opportunities for collaboration with companies and institutions. Large projects preferably have demonstrable spin-offs for a region.
