Single Top Quark Production at the LHC
– Data Processing and Cross Section Measurement –

Hurng-Chun Lee, promovendus aan het Nikhef, verdedigt zijn proefschrift dinsdag 29 oktober 2013 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Single top quark production in the hadron collider provides useful information for testing the Standard Model of particle physics and for probing new physics.  The measurement of the single-top signal is however challenging due to its small cross section and suffers from large backgrounds.

The single-top signal can be accessed via 3 production processes, namely the s-, t- and Wt-channels.  The detection in the Wt-channel is of interest for the LHC given that only the evidences in the s- and t-channels are reported by Tevatron.

The study described in this thesis addresses the challenges of analyzing massive amounts of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2011, performing one of the first cross section measurements of the single top quark production in the Wt-channel. It also establishes a basis for further research in this single top quark production channel at the LHC.
