The color of X-rays – Spectral X-ray computed tomography using energy sensitive pixel detectors

Enrico Schioppa, promovendus aan het Nikhef, verdedigt zijn proefschrift vrijdag 5 december 2014 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, the same as light. Although we know what colors are when referring to visible light, the definition of colors for X-rays is somewhat different, and relates to the properties of the materials that this radiation traverses. While the human eye has been trained by nature to perceive different colors in visible light, artificial retinas for the detection of "the colors of X-rays" have been developed only recently. In this thesis I prove how, thanks to this technology, we are now able to improve conventional radiography systems in order to get higher quality images with less delivered dose, and how we are able to more powerfully distinguish different materials in the imaged samples.
