Title: "An Introduction to Atmospheric Physics"

Abstract:
Planets with atmospheres are now known to be common, such as Earth or one of the many known exoplanets. Given that these bodies have atmospheres, what physics do they share in common? How would one construct a model for them? In this talk, you will learn the ingredients needed to model a planetary atmosphere and climate. I will first discuss the components of the climate system, before moving onto the primitive equations which describe the large scale flow in an atmosphere or ocean. I will then present the physics of an Earth-like atmospheric model; radiative transfer, cloud physics, turbulence and convection, and discuss their successes and uncertainties. Lastly, I will outline a project which uses theoretical methods to understand rainfall on Earth.
