Engineers and physicists at Nikhef are working on modifications to experiments at CERN that will enable them to handle the deluge of collisions in the more intense HiLumi LHC accelerator. More precise timing is a key factor in this effort, with a particular focus on ATLAS.
In the fourth installment of the summer series on Nikhef’s work for the high-luminosity LHC at CERN, two projects in the field of high-speed data acquisition are featured. HGTD is a new component in ATLAS that records particle transit times with greater precision. FELIX is a Nikhef-made interface capable of rapidly transmitting sensor data to surrounding computer systems.
Previous episodes of the series covered the upgraded accelerator, the physics goals associated with the more intense beams, and a new inner detector for ATLAS. Next week’s final episode will focus on the work being done on the necessary computer infrastructure, in which Nikhef is involved in numerous projects.
