PAPERCLIP VIDEO: damping vibrations for Einstein Telescope

Nikhef PhD student Pooya Saffarieh has developed a control system that uses sensors and actuators to minimise vibrations in a gravitational wave detector such as the Einstein Telescope. It is similar to the noise-cancelling technology found in headphones, he explains in a new Nikhef PAPERCLIP video. His system enables engineers to design the quietest mirrors for the Einstein Telescope. Saffarieh will defend his thesis on 28 September at VU University Amsterdam.
