PhD defense Anthony Bwembya @ RU
Anthony Bwembya, PhD at Nikhef, will defend his thesis 6 October 2026 at 10.30 at the Radboud University.
“In Phase With the Cosmos: Mass Composition of Cosmic Raysvia Radio Interferometry”
Cosmic rays are extremely energetic particles arriving at Earth from space. When they enter the atmosphere, they create enormous cascades of secondary particles called air showers. My thesis explores how radio signals produced by these showers can be used to determine what the original cosmic rays were. In particular, I developed and tested precise timing and interferometric techniques for the AugerPrime Radio Detector at the Pierre Auger Observatory. These methods allow signals from many antennas to be combined coherently and can improve our ability to reconstruct very inclined air showers and estimate where the shower reaches its maximum development.
The PhD defense will take place at the Aula of the Radboud University Nijmegen, Comeniuslaan 2, Nijmegen.
