Nikhef-onderzoekers Alessandro Grelli (UU) en Kaliopi Petraki ontvangen elk een Vidi-subsidie voor hun onderzoek.
Vidi is een financieringsinstrument uit de Vernieuwingsimpuls van NWO. Het stelt onderzoekers die al een aantal jaren onderzoek doen op postdocniveau in staat een eigen vernieuwende onderzoekslijn te ontwikkelen en daartoe zelf één of meer onderzoekers aan te stellen. Het maximale bedrag dat kan worden ontvangen met een Vidi-subsidie is
€ 800.000,-.
De Engelstalige samenvattingen van de onderzoeken
Dr. Alessandro Grelli werkte aan zijn onderzoek ‘The hottest place in the Universe’: Atoms are accelerated up to almost the speed of light and then they collide. The heat developed during such collision is so intense that the ordinary matter melts. As a consequence the same state of matter present in our Universe, a few fractions of a second after the Big Bang, is created. The researcher will study its properties by using heavy-quarks as a probe.
Dr. Kalliopi Petraki deed onderzoek naar ‘Deciphering the dark matter code’:
Dark matter is a mysterious substance that makes up most of the mass in our universe. Its gravity made it possible for galaxies to form, and host stars and planets like our own. By observing galaxies carefully, researchers try to infer what dark matter consists of and how it interacts.
