The Higgs boson in the H->ZZ->4l decay channel with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Antonio Salvucci, promovendus aan het Nikhef, verdedigt zijn proefschrift dinsdag 23 september 2014 aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

In the first part of this thesis is given the theoretical framework of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, focusing on the production and physical properties of the Higgs Boson. A description of the Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS experiment is also given, together with the reconstruction techniques used to identify the physics objects, such as electrons and muons. In the second part of this thesis, first the performance of Muon System installed in the ATLAS detector are reported. In particular, the muon momentum resolution of the ATLAS detector has been studied, using the decays of the Z boson into muons and the information of the Inner Detector and the Muon Spectrometer installed on the ATLAS detector. Then the Higgs boson search in the H->ZZ->4l decay channel are reported. The search is based on the combination of pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2011 and 2012 at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb-1at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy and 20.7 fb-1 at 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy. The discovery of a new particle compatible with the Standard Model Higgs boson has been presented. Moreover, in order to verify if the new discovered particle was the Standard Model Higgs boson or not, its spin and parity have been measured. The Standard Model hypothesis, consisting in a Higgs boson having spin zero and even parity, has been tested against other spin and parity hypotheses. A multivariate technique has been developed for this purpose. The Higgs-like boson has been found to be compatible with the SM predictions.
