Nikhef researcher Patrick Koppenburg discussed the latest news about the muon in the podcast series of the British journal Physics World. Is there something weird going on with the heavier brother of the electron?
Both in the decay of B mesons and in the g-2 magnetic dipole-momentum of the muon, deviations from what the Standard Model expects have been seen this spring. Are these deviations the harbingers of new physics? And is this an answer to the question physicists asked when the muon was discovered in 1936: “Who ordered this?”
