On Saturday, October 7, Nikhef opened some of its doors during the Amsterdam Science Park Open Day 2023. It also provided a glimpse of the renovated Nikhef building that will soon be completed.
Nikhef researchers, PhD students and technicians were on hand to answer questions about Nikhef research in (astro)particle physics with. With virtual reality glasses, visitors could wander around the gravitational wave lab ETpathfinder or the neutrino detector KM3NeT. Guided tours were given by researchers along the DOMs, the components of the grand neutrino detector KM3NeT currently being placed in the Mediterranean Sea. Nikhef program leader Dorothea Samtleben gave a mini-lecture on this research into neutrinos.
The smallest visitors were not forgotten: they could solder together ladybugs and bats, make cookies with LHCb researchers and the ‘candy growing machine’ was again a great success.
Below is an impression of the day. Next year (October 5, 2024) we look forward to receiving you in our completely renovated building in Amsterdam!
The Open Day of Amsterdam Science Park takes place every year during the Weekend of Science (first weekend of October) and is a collaboration of Nikhef, AMOLF, CWI, SurfSARA, UvA, AUC & NLeSC. More information about the rest of the institutes can be found on the Amsterdam Science Park website.
