In the ‘Depict your research competition’ of the Dutch Journal of Physics (NTvN), Nikhef researcher Kelly Weerman won the encouragement prize. Weerman depicted her PhD research on neutrinos with a comic strip.

The jury was very pleased with Weerman’s submission, which finished only narrowly behind the two main prize winners. The jury therefore decided to award Weerman the encouragement prize for her funny comic strip.

Kelly Weerman: “At KamLAND, we study one of the biggest mysteries in the universe: is the neutrino its own antiparticle? This is groundbreaking research – and yet few people know about this experiment. With my comic strip, I hope to change that. I try to convey my research in a light-hearted and fun way, inspired by the humour and style of the Donald Duck. ”

Last year, the NTvN editors organised this competition for the first time in which participants were challenged to depict their research. This could be done in many different ways: an infographic, comic strip, photo report and so on. The choice was up to the participant, as long as image played the main role.

For the judges, the number of submissions and the quality of the submissions was proof that this is a competition format that challenges participants to look at their research in a different way.
