Beamline for Schools competition: pre-registration now open!

16 October 2023

CERN offers high school students around the world the chance to invent and perform a science experiment in one of CERN’s or DESY’s beamlines!

In 2023, the Dutch Augustinianum school was one of the winners of the BL4S competition: https://www.nikhef.nl/en/news/dutch-school-one-of-3-winners-of-beamline-for-schools-competition/

CERN is of course known for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), but that’s not all it’s about. Much of CERN’s research is carried out in so-called fixed-target beamlines, which are used for smaller experiments with many different purposes. One of these beamlines will be made available to the winner of the ‘Beamline for Schools’ contest.

The ‘Beamline for Schools’ contest is open to teams of at least 5 students ages 16 and up, with one adult supervisor or coach. Come up with a simple, creative experiment.

Pre-registration for 2024 is now open: https://beamlineforschools.cern/form/preregistration-2024

Proposal submission starts in January 2024 and the deadline for submission is April 10, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. CEST.
