A strategy for a general search for new phenomena using data-derived signal regions and its application within the ATLAS experiment

This paper describe the other end of the spectrum in searches for possible new physics: instead of assuming a particular theory model, analyze without such assumptions through an wide as possible range of possible collision signatures in order to look for excesses of the Standard Model prediction. This analysis strategy, largely pioneered by Nikhef in ATLAS, casts the widest possible net for ‘unexpected’ new physics signatures in our data.
