Galileo and I

Now for a brief history of Chris. I obtained my doctoral degree at the (since renamed) Institute for Gravitational Physics and Geometry of the Pennsylvania State University, under Prof. Ashtekar. After that I was a postdoctoral research associate in the gravity group at Cardiff University, working with Prof. Sathyaprakash. Currently I am a Senior Scientist in the gravitational physics group of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef) in Amsterdam, where I continue to pursue research in the detection and interpretation of gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars and black holes. I am married to Lisa Beede. We have a cat called Betty, who is certifiably insane, but we love her all the same.

Below are some things I'm fond of. (The list is far from complete and will grow longer as time goes by.)

- Hard SF

- Mathematical curiosities

Click here to read about how I once crashed Roger Penrose's computer (from across the Atlantic).

My Erdös number is at most 4. Click here for the proof.

I had the great fortune to meet Paul Kocela, who wrote down his wartime experiences as a boy in Czechoslowakia in his book The Angelus.

Finally, although I don't have a well-defined "philosophy of life", Max Ehrmann's Desiderata was recently brought to my attention and I rather like it.
