B Physics at NIKHEF:

Study of CP violation in B decays

We participate in the LHC-B experiment at CERN and the HERA-B experiment at DESY. The main aim of these experiments is to study the phenomenon of CP violation, one of the outstanding issues in particle physics. The CP operation links particles to their anti-particles. CP violation points to a subtle difference in the behavior of matter and anti-matter. It is closely related to the question of the dominance of matter over antimatter in our universe. HERA-B, situated at DESY in Hamburg, aims at the first observation of CP violation in B decays. First data taking is planned in 1998. LHC-B at CERN will operate at the new LHC collider which is expected to start-up in 2005. In this experiment a detailed study of the CP violation problem will be possible as well as the investigation of a wide range of other topics in B decays.

You can find more about the physics of CP-violation in the lectures for PhD students by A. Buijs and W. Ruckstuhl, en hier vind je een korte beschrijving van CP-schending in het nederlands.

Post Doc Position at NIKHEF in LHC-B group

NIKHEF participation

HERA-B
- Design and construction of the Outer Tracker and the Silicon Inner Tracker
- physics analysis.
LHC-B:
- Tracking (Outer Tracker and Vertex Detector)
- Trigger (in particular topology trigger
- Software development and detector optimization with Monte Carlo Studies.
In both experiments, the Outer Tracker consists of large wire chambers, so-called honeycomb chambers.

You can get a list of all group members, or browse through our conference talks and other presentations

Student Projects

We have interesting student projects in many areas. Students can be employed at almost any time, both for short projects (2 months) and graduation research (9 months). These projects are incorporated in the ongoing investigation of our staff and PhD-students. More information can be found here

Internal Information:

Part of this information is only available on local machines, some of it is in dutch.
