The detector R&D group works on development of detector technologies, currently mostly based on chips of the Medipix family from the Medipix2 and Medipix3 collaborations of which Nikhef is a prominent member.

There are two main lines of research; one based on semiconductor sensors bump bonded to the Medipix chips. The other line focuses on building a gaseous detector on top of the Medipix chip.

In collaboration with industry several projects are under way to apply the detector technology from the scientific community in products. Together with PANalytical a first commercial product has been developed. The Relaxd project builds on this to develop a high-speed X-ray video camera capable of 1000 frames per second.
