Practical
Most practical info can be found
on www.nikhef.nl->local information-> "Wie wat waar" pdf files.
(Visitor) access
The most important points are summarized below:
1. You can access and leave the buildings by means of your (drop-shaped)
entrance pass. If you plan to stay in the building after 7pm, call
3000 and give security your key number.
2. Incidental visitors should be announced before hand at
http://key.wcw.nl/p2ktc/we/app/user/Login.aspx?
Please see instructions at
http://www.wcw.nl/wcwonly/Handleiding_aanmelden_bezoeker_dd_20080704.pdf
Website
We have a website www.nikhef.nl/pub/theory, which contains many
useful links, and a list of events at Nikhef.
News at Nikhef and at large
From our theory group webpage you can see the latest
on seminars in our group, and NIKHEF in general.
** I trust that everyone checks the Nikhef agenda, and
is aware of seminars etc. Don't rely on reminders! **
Recommended: general particle physics news
via "News in particle physics",
Computing
For technical questions: ask around, or mail
the helpdesk (helpdesk@nikhef.nl).
Bert Schellekens manages the distribution of PC's over the desks,
and special software requests. On our webpage you can find an
up-to-date listing of PC's, their speeds etc, and the software
installed.
Travel
Talk to Eric first when thinking about a trip,
with a reasonable estimates of costs. Request
should be made as early as possible, at the
_latest_ 3 weeks before travel, using
this website
Do keep in mind that our budget, while not microscopic,
is not infinite either. To be reimbursed, complete
the travel procedure on the same website, and hand
in copies of your tickets, bills etc, by putting them
in an envelope with the travel number, your name
and destination, and put the envelope in the letterbox
outside the finance dept. door.
Nikhef colloquium
Everyone is _very strongly_ encouraged to attend the Nikhef colloquium.
It is on Fridays, at 15.30 in H331. Drinks afterwards.
Even if the topic does not have a strong match with your own
research interests, there is always something interesting to learn.
Journal club
Journal Club will be held roughly once every two weeks,
blackboard talks, 45 minutes, about topics not immediately
related to research-du-jour. Volunteers for speaking will
be appointed. Organizers this year: Jan and Pierre
Theory seminars
These are now held regularly, see
here .
Organizers this year: Damien and Mert
Seminars elsewhere
Can be found via theory web page. Note that UvA seminars will
be held "across the street" after summer 2010.
Theory center meetings
About once a month/once a semester, at Nikhef.
See
here .
National seminar theoretical physics
Twice a year, at Nikhef/CWI in Z011. See the info
here .
Lectures
Info on Topical lectures can be found
here
and on the theoretical AIO-OIO school
here .
Scientific activities
Please get a Nikhef preprint number from the
Nikhef library. Although perhaps slightly old-fashioned,
it really helps in compiling the annual report.
Please let Eric know if you
* want to submit a grant proposal
* are involved in organizing a conference or school
* give a talk at a conference
This will also be helpful for yearly reports etc.
Social activities
We had an excellent outing 11 organized by Damien and Reinier.
2012 organizers are Mert and Rob.
Early december we will celebrate Sinterklaas. Poetry skills
required! More details will follow.
Don't hesitate to talk to me if you have any questions or concerns.
I wish everyone a fun and productive year!
Eric
