Three additional lines of ANTARES deployed

Three additional lines of the ANTARES neutrino telescope have been deployed in the Mediterranean Sea over the last six weeks. Last weekend these lines were connected to the shore station by means of a remotely operated submarine vehicle ("ROV"). Friday 26 January, after the 3rd line was connected, it quickly became clear that almost all light-sensitive devices were alive. Two days later the 4th and 5th detectorline of ANTARES were connected to the shore station as well. The on-line readout system started up smoothly, enabling communication with all sectors of the five detector lines. This is another success in the deep-sea data-acquisition system which is designed by NIKHEF. Basically, almost half of the neutrino telescope is now operational. By the end of this year the seven remaining detector lines are scheduled to be installed.
