The National Institute for Subatomic Physics in the Netherlands (NIKHEF) has several openings for PhD students and postdocs in

Astroparticle Physics

NIKHEF coordinates and supports major research activities in experimental and theoretical subatomic physics in the Netherlands. It is supported by the national funding agency for physics research FOM, the Universiteit van Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen and the Universiteit Utrecht. The academic staff consists of about 120 physicists of whom more than half are PhD students or postdoctoral research associates. Technical support is provided by a well-equipped mechanical workshop, an advanced electronic engineering workshop, an engineering design group and an information technology group. The technical support staff totals about 100. The design and construction of detectors and the analysis of data takes place at the institute in Amsterdam as well as at the participating universities.

The institute is involved in large-scale high-energy physics experiments at CERN (Atlas, LHCb and Alice), DESY (Hermes and Zeus), FermiLab (D0) and SLAC (BaBar). Moreover, it participates in the European high-energy neutrino astroparticle physics project ANTARES. The ANTARES detector, which is currently under construction, will involve the deployment of 12 strings containing a total of 900 optical modules at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2.5 km.

Applications are invited for postdoctoral research associates and graduate students in the astroparticle physics research group at NIKHEF. This group is involved in the ANTARES project, and design and development work for the future large-scale KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino detector. Within these collaborations NIKHEF is leading the information technology development, including read-out systems based on modern optical data transmission techniques and advanced filtering and reconstruction software.

Successful applicants will participate in the commissioning of the ANTARES experiment, the analysis of the first data and/or the design and development of the future KM3NeT project.

NIKHEF offers young researchers outstanding opportunities in the field of scientific research, in which international co-operation and quality are keywords. Interest in fundamental scientific questions is necessary. If you like to work in a team, are interested in modern electronics and data-processing systems, you are a candidate for experimental research at NIKHEF.

Training for PhD students

The young researchers will receive a thorough training within the international research school "Subatomic Physics". The graduate students will profit from a well-structured and multidisciplinary training and research program. She/he will have the opportunity to be engaged in many international contacts at NIKHEF and (for brief periods) at foreign laboratories. Information about the scientific and educational activities at NIKHEF can be found at www.nikhef.nl.

Terms of employment

The postdoctoral research associates and graduate students will be appointed by the funding agency FOM on the basis of a two (for postdocs) or four (for PhD students) year contract. For information on the terms of employment please contact Mr. T. van Egdom (phone: +31 20 592 5077 or email: pz@nikhef.nl).
