Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands with about 250 employees including about 120 physicists. Based in Amsterdam, it is a collaboration between four universities and the funding agency FOM. The institute co-ordinates and supports major activities in experimental subatomic physics in the Netherlands, among them the preparation of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, notably ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE, and several astroparticle physics projects, such as the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the Auger cosmic-ray observatory and the VIRGO gravitational wave interferometer.
Embedded in the institute is the Nikhef theory group with five permanent staff members, about ten postdocs and PhD students, as well as bachelor and master students. The group maintains close links with other theory groups in the Netherlands through joint seminars and collaborative national research programmes.
The Nikhef theory group seeks to appoint a
as a staff member with tenure. We expect our new colleague to have an excellent background in theoretical high-energy physics as reflected in research and publication records. We look for candidates who are interested in the physics of the standard model and beyond, and have affinity with the Nikhef experimental program.
The applicant must have a PhD in theoretical particle physics and an excellent research and publication record. Applicants are judged as to creativity, ability to establish an active and independent research line including supervision of PhD students, and the ability to communicate developments through seminars as well as lectures.
Further information can be obtained from the leader of the theory group, prof. dr. E. Laenen (phone +31 20 5925127 or by email Eric.Laenen@nikhef.nl) or from the chairman of the selection committee, prof. dr. P.J.G. Mulders (phone +31 20 5987863 or by email pjg.mulders@few.vu.nl). Job interviews are foreseen in the period February 1st 2009 until February 15th 2009.
Candidates are invited to send their application, including curriculum vitae, list of publications as well as three letters of reference before November 24, 2008 to:
