LHCb OT Module Components
Module Panels & Side Walls
The Outer Tracker
Module Panels
and Side Walls
will be produced in Cracow as part of a cooperation agreement
between NIKHEF
and INP
.
The detailed description of the
production programme and the technical specification can be found in the
following documents:
which are an integral part of this cooperation agreement.
Several prototypes have been already produced at INP. They were surveyed at
NIKHEF and found compliant to the technical specifications
.
A Module Panel consists of:
-
a laminated panel with a core of light material sandwiched by two rigid
skins to stiffen it
-
two inserts glued between the panel skins at the panel ends
-
thin Aluminium strips attached to the panels side
The
main
components of the Module Panels, the laminated panel
consist
of:
- thin
high-modulus skins of Carbon Fibre Composite (CFC) glued on both sides
of a 10 mm thick core of Rohacell foam
-
to ensure the sealing of the gas box and its electrical shielding and
grounding, a thin laminate of Kapton and Aluminium will be added to one
side of the panel (later to become the inner side of the gas box). This
thin laminate will be glued to the CFC skin (its Kapton side facing the
CFC skin) over the full length and width of the panel.
Details of the panel materials and their properties are given in Sect.3.1.1
of the
Technical Specification
. The geometrical dimensions and tolerances are specified in the
sub-assembly drawings
.
At each end of the Module Panel, an insert will be glued, sandwiched
between the two CFC skins. Precision passing holes in this insert will permit
the alignment of the panels during the detector-module assembly and provide
the interface to the support system. Details of the insert materials and
their properties are given
in
Sect.3.1.2 of the
Technical Specification
.
The geometrical dimensions and tolerances are specified
in the
sub-assembly drawings
.
Thin (0.020-0.025mm) Aluminum strips will be glued to the panel
sides to permit electrical connection between the panel inner and outer sides
in the
detector-module assembly
.
All Module Side-Walls (“SW”) will be made out of thin CFC and produced
with the full length of 5000 mm; Side-Walls for shorter modules (types S1,S2,S3,
see Sect.2.3 of the
Technical Specification
) will then be cut from full-length ones.
To ensure the sealing of the gas box and its electrical shielding and
grounding, a thin laminate of Kapton and Aluminum will be added to one side
of the Side Walls (later to become the inner side of the gas box). This thin
laminate will be glued to the CFC skin (its Kapton side facing the CFC skin)
over the full length and width of the strip. On the other side, a thin Aluminum
foil will be glued over the full length and width of the strip.
Details of the panel materials and their properties are given in Sect.3.2
of the
Technical Specification
. The geometrical dimensions and tolerances are specified in the
sub-assembly drawings
.
