NIKHEF is one of many
institutes world-wide involved in the construction of the ATLAS
experiment due to start in 2005 at CERN.
Among other commitments, NIKHEF is to assemble one of the two SCT (Semi-Conductor Trackers)
End-caps. Each consists of nine carbon-fibre discs held
in a carbon fibre cylinder. Each has about 1000 silicon-strip detectors mounted on the
discs to detect the passage of particles from high-energy proton collisions
at the centre of the ATLAS detector. NIKHEF has also worked on the ATLAS Pixel detector.
