PHOTON '97

Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands
E-mail address: photon97@nikhef.nl

May 10-15, 1997 (Saturday - Thursday)

General Information

PHOTON '97 is a workshop-style conference on the structure and the interactions of the photon. It will focus on experimental results from electron-positron and electron-proton colliders and on related theoretical issues. These concern the production of elementary particles in collisions at energies from 1 to 100 GeV or higher. Topics will include the photon structure function, total cross sections, diffraction, jet production and resonance production. Moreover, the future of the research field will be discussed. Subjects for the future are for example experiments at photon-photon colliders and the study of interactions of other gauge bosons than the photon.

Topics will include:
  • The photon structure function
  • Inclusive processes
  • Exclusive processes
  • Diffractive and elastic scattering
  • Future directions
  • Related fields

PHOTON '97 incorporates the 11th International Workshop on Photon-Photon Collisions. The format will follow that of previous meetings in this series, with ample opportunity for the presentation of contributed papers. In order to preserve the workshop atmosphere, attendance will be limited to 130 participants.
The conference is sponsored by NIKHEF and the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM).

Location and Housing

The conference will be held in Hotel't Zuiderduin
address:
Zeeweg 52, 1931 VL Egmond aan Zee,
Tel. 072-5065000, Fax 072-5063440.

The village of Egmond aan Zee, where good food and pleasant shops can be found, is surrounded by kilometres of broad sand dunes - these in turn lead to an impressive polderland that, at a distance of 8 kilometres is crowned by the city of Alkmaar. This city is well known for its cheese market held every Friday, with carriers dressed in traditional guild costumes, and for its demonstrations of old trades. From Alkmaar the famous city of Amsterdam can be reached by the intercity train in about 35 minutes.

Travel information

By air:
Egmond can be reached via the Amsterdam International Airport "Schiphol".

A shuttle bus service has been arranged to transport delegates, arriving in the afternoon of Saturday May 10, from Schiphol Airport to Hotel 't Zuiderduin.

As assembly point we use the "Meetingpoint" in the arrival hall at Schiphol Airport. A person from the bus organisation "Tromp" will wait here and accompany the arriving guests to the bus. A charge of NLG 25,-- per person will be made for use of this service.

Schedule Shuttle Bus Service May 10
08:30 hrs.
10:00 hrs.
12:30 hrs.
14:00 hrs.
16:30 hrs.

21:45 hrs.

On the day of departure a service will be arranged for the transport from Hotel 't Zuiderduin to Schiphol Airport.

In the event your flight does not connect with this shuttle it is possible to come to Egmond aan Zee by Public Transport.

The Web pages of Schiphol will give you information about the airlines servicing Amsterdam and about the facilities of the airport.

The journey from Schiphol to Egmond consists of the following steps:

By train:
See the time tables of the international trains to and from the Netherlands.
Proceed from Amsterdam CS as described above.

See also:

By car:
From Amersfoort, Utrecht, Rotterdam, The Hague take motorway A9 direction Alkmaar.
From Amsterdam take the ring road called "Ring" (A10) and proceed in the direction Alkmaar via motorways A8 and A9.
At the (southern) entry of Alkmaar : take 'Ring-West', direction 'Den Helder'. After 3 km take exit in the direction 'Egmond'. After 5 km follow 'Egmond aan Zee'. In the town Egmond aan Zee follow the direction "Centrum" than follow direction "Strand-Zuid". Now you are on the Admiraal de Ruyterweg, after a few curves this becomes the "Zeeweg". Hotel 't Zuiderduin is then on your right side on Zeeweg 52.

Passport and visa:
Please make sure your passport is not expired and you have your visa (if required).

Some remarks about public transport in the Netherlands

Excursions

On the afternoon of Wednesday May 14, a choice of two excursions will be available. A party will visit the "Keukenhof". A beautiful park of 80 acres with 6 million tulips, narcissi, daffodils, hyacinths and other flower bulbs, ancient trees, flowering shrubs, ponds, fountains and works of modern art. One of Holland's most famous attractions. Another group will have the opportunity to visit in Amsterdam the "Rijksmuseum", with the famous 17th century Dutch paintings. Think about "Rembrandt, Steen, Vermeer". The "Rijksmuseum" is situated in the Museum Square Area, where you also find the "Van Gogh Museum and "The Stedelijk Museum" , one of the world's major museum of modern art.

At the end of this day the two groups will meet in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, a picturesque town near Amsterdam, for the conference dinner.

Fee

The conference fee of 550 NLG is payable in advance (The fee for payments received after March 10 1997 is 600 NLG). The fee covers the attendance at PHOTON '97, a copy of the proceedings, the conference dinner and the conference excursion. Accommodation at the hotel will cost 710 NLG per person for a single room and 650 NLG per person for a double room, including all meals, coffee, tea and soft drinks during breaks and the use of the sauna and swimming pool. Accommodation for accompanying persons will cost 590 NLG per person for a double room including all meals, and the use of sauna and swimming pool.

Abstracts and Contributed Papers

Those persons or collaborations wishing to submit a contribution to the conference are asked to indicate such on the registration form and to send a (preliminary) one-page abstract to the secretariat, preferably by e-mail. The DEADLINE for such abstracts is March 14, 1997. Contributors will be informed before April 1st whether their contribution has been selected for presentation. For the selected abstracts, we then request before May 1st the final one-page abstract, which will appear in the conference handbook. The preliminary abstract should be a LaTeX or plain text document fitting 15 x 23 cm (6 x 9 inch). The final abstract should be a LaTeX document conforming to the template. Please underline the name of the person who will present the contribution.

Template files available for submitting abstracts:
LaTeX-file [abstract.tex], ps-file [abstract.ps], style files: for wrapping figures [wrapfig.sty], for including eps figures [epsf.sty], and another one for including eps figures [epsfig.sty].
You can download these by holding the SHIFT key while you click on them.
The abstract file and possible .eps files should be mailed to photon97@nikhef.nl before the deadline of March 14, 1997 .

Proceedings

As in previous years, the proceedings will be published by World Scientific Publishing and sent to all participants. The deadline for submission of the text for the proceedings is June 15, 1997.

The page allocation is five pages per twenty minutes of presentation (including discussion). The theoretical and experimental contributions thus have five pages each, the introductory and summary talks 10 pages each, and the presentation on cosmic muons 15 pages.
Papers which have been submitted to the conference, but were not presented orally, receive one (1) page in the proceedings.

We strongly urge you to use LaTeX for the preparation of your entry in the proceedings. The appropriate style file is sprocl.sty. An example of how to use this style file is in sprocl.tex.

Please send the LaTeX file, together with possible encapsulated postscript files, to photon97@nikhef.nl, before June 15.
