Incredibly complex equipment is needed for research in particle physics. Due to the pioneering nature of the work and the expert knowledge present within research institutes, such equipment is usually developed in-house.
Nikhef is developing detectors that can register these tremendously small particles. These are produced during collisions between particles in the beamof a particle accelerator or during cosmic processes. The detectors measure very accurately and quickly. The material from which the detector is made needs to be strong but must not hinder the particles. The design and construction of these detectors is therefore a highly complex task.
