Nikhef attaches great worth to good working conditions. A safe, healthy and pleasant working environment contributes to an enjoyable working atmosphere and lessens the chance of absence through sickness and undesirable accidents, emergencies and other incidents.
Working conditions consist of three principal topics: Safety, health and well-being. For the latter the term Psycho Social Labour Risks (Psycho Sociale Arbeidsbelasting), is used. PSA is dealt with later under the policy for PSA.
According to the Dutch Working Act, (de ‘arbo-wet’ in Dutch) the employer (in Nikhef’s case, the Director) is responsible for the care of and adhesion to, good working conditions. Obviously this responsibility cannot be carried solely by the Director, therefore employer and employee work together in the areas of safety, health and well being.
To achieve good working conditions is it important to follow a policy on health and safety. The full health and safety at work policy can be found here (currently only available in Dutch).
The basis for the establishment of the health and safety at work policy is laid down in the Risk Inventory en Evaluation (risk assessment) known as the RI&E. The RI&E describes the risks associated with the work, how serious the risks are and what measures can be taken to limit those risks. RI&E evaluations were carried out at Nikhef in 1999 and in 2005, by the ‘arbo-dienst’ (Nederlands’ health and safety executive). The RI&E’s can be found on the following links: RI&E 1999 and RI&E 2005. The health and safety policy has been moulded from and is based on both of these RI&E’s.
