The Medipix chip family was initially developed with the hybridisation process in mind. The idea was to mount a silicon pixel detector on top of the pixel matrix by means of the bump-bonding process.

This line of research has led to many applications with silicon detectors, the latest at Nikhef being the large area system being constructed within the framework of the Relaxd project.

With the advent of detection materials with higher Z, to more effectively detect higher energetic X-rays, the work has also led to the study of such materials like GaAs and Cd(Zn)Te.

Another line of research with the Medipix chips as a base is realised with gaseous detectors.
